Tuesday’s winter weather live updates: Slick spots lead to wrecks, road closures

Many people in the Triangle are waking up to a dusting of snow as far south as Johnston County and up to an inch in the Wake Forest area.

The big issue for early Tuesday is the chance for slick roads due to moisture that froze overnight.
The latest
6 a.m. – A wreck on I-540 at Buffaloe Road in Raleigh is causing backups. Temperatures are in the upper 20s across the area. WRAL meteorologist Chris Michaels said it will be around ‘four-and-a-half to five hours’ before we get above 32 degrees.
5:45 a.m. – US-264 West near Zebulon has reopened after crews treated the road. Nearby, there was a wreck involving a truck that was wrapped around a tree on US-64 at Debnam Road.
5:28 a.m. – We are hearing about multiple crashes on I-540 near Neuse River. There have also been reports of icy roads in Franklin County on NC-98, US0-1 at Green Street and MC Wilder Road.

4:45 a.m. – A bridge on US-264 West near Zebulon is closed as DOT crews treat the road. Nearby, US-64 at Debnam Road. is closed due to a wreck.
4:19 a.m. – I-87 South has reopened. We are following other slick roads in the area. Raleigh police said that there have been five crashes related to ice. Durham police said there has been at least one crash related to weather.
3:53 a.m. – I-87 South is closed at exit 13 near Knightdale in Wake County. The State Highway Patrol told WRAL that a tractor-trailer got stuck on an icy bridge. We are hearing of five confirmed crashes on I-87 this morning.
3:30 a.m. – Snow totals are starting to come in and it looks like the Wake Forest and Youngsville area had about an inch of snow.
3 a.m. – WRAL meteorologist Chris Michaels said main road temperatures are in the 20s so drivers need to be careful when hitting the road. “If you see a wet spot on the roads, assume it is ice,” he said.
