Gyokeres: “A very difficult way to lose” | Interview | News

After seeing us concede with the last kick of the game against Aston Villa, Viktor Gyokeres admitted that it was a tough result to take.

Matty Cash had given the hosts the lead at Villa Park, but our resilience to keep fighting saw us draw level through Leandro Trossard and looked set to take a useful point back to north London with us.

However, we suffered late heartache when Emi Buendia managed to steer the ball home in the final few seconds to end our 18-game unbeaten run in all competitions, and while Viktor revealed that the mood in the dressing was understandably low, there is already a desire to get to the next game and try to start another lengthy undefeated streak.

“We are of course disappointed with the result,” the Swedish striker said. “It’s not a great feeling right now, but it’s only December and there are a lot of games to play.

“You can always find some positives, but it’s still a very difficult way to lose a football game. It’s tough right now, but we’ll look forward to the next one soon.”

Arteta on the test we face as unbeaten run ends

Despite the hosts coming into the game having lost once at home in 25 matches, we peppered the Villa goal throughout a helter-skelter contest with Emiliano Martinez forced to repel nine shots on target to keep his team in the game.

Viktor feels that is a positive we can take into our upcoming fixtures and focus on, and that on another day, it could well have been us celebrating a famous win. Instead, he hopes we learn from this disappointment and use it as motivation ahead of future challenges.

“We have to keep creating chances and get shots on goal because then you’ll eventually score more goals,” he added. “So yes, that’s of course a positive and we just need to do things in between also a bit better.

“It’s football. If you score in the last few seconds or minutes, that is an unbelievable feeling, so it goes both ways. Today, unfortunately, it was the other way. It’s tough, but you learn from it.

“If we focus on what we can control and do in our favour and focus on the next game, we’ll be better, I think.”
