A schoolboy’s dream came true when he performed a Christmas classic on stage with Aled Jones. Jack Cole, 10, from Cressington has “lived and breathed” musical theatre since the age of seven. So when the opportunity to audition for a part of stage alongside Mr Jones came about, the schoolboy jumped at the chance.

The Welsh singer gained fame in 1985 with his recording of Walking in the Air, which reached number five in the UK singles chart. Jack auditioned to sing the song, featured in animated classic The Snowman, on Sunday, with Mr Jones and the Fulltone Orchestra at Marlborough College Memorial Hall in Wiltshire to mark the 40th anniversary since the release of the track.

His mum Rachel Cole told the ECHO how Jack first fell in love with singing and dancing at the age of seven.

She said: “His big sister started going to theatre school and he showed an interest so we took him along, we thought it would be just one of those things kids liked for a while but he loved it.

“He lives and breathes musical theatre. So when we saw the competition we thought, ‘why not’ and told him to send in an audition tape.”

Jack won the competition alongside a girl named Loretta, and they both performed at individual concerts last week. Rachel said: “He was so happy, really excited and we were so proud of him, his gran sobbed through the whole thing.”

Rachel says Jack’s dream is to be in musical theatre and he “absolutely loved” the whole experience.

Following the performance Aled Jones said performing with the young singers was a “real highlight” adding that they were lovely artists with “great musical instinct”.

He said: “It was a pleasure to share the stage with them.”
