Obituary for Deborah “Debbie” Jean (Gunderson) Mauel

Deborah “Debbie” J. Mauel, age 65 of Clintonville passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at the ThedaCare Hospital New London.
Deborah “Debbie” Jean Mauel was born May 10, 1960 in Clintonville, WI, daughter to the late Garfield & Geneva (Rose) Gunderson. She attended Clintonville Schools and graduated with the class of 1978. She was united in marriage to Thomas F. Mauel at Christus Lutheran Church, Clintonville on August 29, 1980. In the early years, Debbie worked at Pine Manor, Mike’s Town & Country (now Marketplace Foods, Clintonville), and Mathew’s Supper Club for a number of years. She also worked as a secretary at Schutt Industries, Clintonville and Kohel Interstate Transport, Marion, as a dispatcher for over 10 years. Finally, Debbie worked as a medical insurance claims specialist for UnitedHealthcare for the last 7 years until her retirement in May of 2025. An avid pool player, Debbie shot in multiple leagues over the years and countless tournaments. Competing as a couple, Debbie and Tom once won three separate tournaments in a single day. The Mauel family loved her cooking and Debbie’s children always looked forward to their favorite dish on their birthday; and her famous chocolate pie every holiday. She had a green thumb and could make anything grow in her large garden; she also enjoyed canning much of the produce she grew. Her plants also found their way into her home where she enjoyed caring for them so they would thrive for many years. Debbie enjoyed riding in the side by side, sometimes on long trips up north as far as Three Lakes. She could always be counted on to support her grandchildren in all of their sports and school activities; she was their biggest cheerleader. Anyone that knew Debbie, knew that she loved angels. Collectible angels were her main decorating theme in her home, and now the Mauel family has another angel looking over them. She lived in Clintonville her whole life, but loved to travel; multiple times to Florida to visit her son, and also vacationing in the Caribbean to places like Jamaica. More locally, she loved to camp with everyone and always in a tent, not a camper. She cherished her many dogs over the years, and her current “baby,” a 110 lb. Rottweiler named Max. Debbie had a tireless work ethic, and a true servant’s heart when it came to helping friends and family; and was truly the rock of Mauel family.
