McDonald’s customer dies in ‘freak accident’ while paying bill in drive thru

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (WKRC) — A McDonald’s customer died in what authorities are calling a “freak accident” on Tuesday.

According to KSNB, 69-year-old Michael Dickinson died in an incident described by law enforcement as a “freak accident.”

The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. at a McDonald’s location on 2nd Street in Grand Island, Nebraska.

When police and firefighters arrived, they found Dickinson trapped between the McDonald’s payment window and his vehicle, according to the report. After he was freed, Dickinson was taken to the emergency room, where he was pronounced dead, KSNB reported.

Grand Island Police Division Chief Dean Elliott spoke with reporters from KSNB and said the incident was “100% a freak accident.”

“It appears the deceased opened the door to further reach out of the window for payment purposes,” Elliott told the station. “We’re not sure if the vehicle lurched forward or what happened, but he became pinned between the door frame and the drive-thru window counter.”

According to KSNB’s report, Dickinson was the only person inside the vehicle at the time. The outlet added that the McDonald’s location remained open after the scene was cleared.
