JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 72-year-old woman trying to cross the Arlington Expressway early Christmas morning was hit and killed near North Arlington Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said that just after 12:30 a.m., the woman slipped through a gap in the fencing that separates the divided expressway and then walked into the path of a car headed west.

According to the report, the driver wasn’t able to slow down in time and hit the woman, who struck her windshield and then landed back on the roadway. The pedestrian died at the scene.

The 30-year-old driver and her 38-year-old male passenger were not hurt. Both were wearing seat belts, troopers said.

They remained at the scene.
