Robert Downey Jr. unveiled as Doctor Doom at Comic-Con

Robert Downey Jr. is set to return to Marvel in the 2026 film “Avengers: Doomsday,” playing the iconic villain Doctor Doom.

“Avengers: Doomsday” trailers, assemble!

New footage from the upcoming Marvel film is now playing in theaters in front of screenings of “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” replacing the previous trailer that had been showing since Dec. 18.

The second trailer, which has not been released online, centers on Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, who is seen walking through the woods and saying a prayer that he will be able to return to his daughter, Love. Thor is also shown kissing Love’s forehead while she lies in bed.

“Father, all my life, I have answered every call, to honor, duty, to war,” Thor says. “But now, fate has given me something I never sought: A child. A life untouched by the storm.”

He continues, “Lend me the strength of the All-Fathers, so that I may fight once more, defeat one more enemy, and return home to her, not as a warrior, but as warmth. To teach her not battle, but stillness, the kind I never knew. Please, father. Heed my words.”

Similar to the first trailer, the footage ends by declaring that Thor will return in “Avengers: Doomsday,” followed by a countdown to the film’s December 2026 release.

This is the first confirmation that Thor’s daughter Love will return in “Avengers: Doomsday.”

The character was introduced in 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” as the daughter of the main villain, Gorr (Christian Bale). When Gorr died at the end of the movie, Thor adopted Love as his own child. The film ended on the promise that Thor and Love, played by Hemsworth’s actual daughter India, would go on adventures together.

Hemsworth’s Thor has not been seen on screen since outside of reused footage in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” but he was previously announced as part of the cast of “Avengers: Doomsday.” The film will seemingly reunite Thor with his brother, Loki, as Tom Hiddleston is also on the official cast list.

The first trailer for “Avengers: Doomsday” premiered in front of screenings of “Avatar: Fire and Ash” beginning Dec. 18, centering on Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers. The footage showed Steve, the former Captain America, arriving at the home he shares with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) from the end of “Avengers: Endgame,” now holding a baby.

Based on the first two trailers, “Avengers: Doomsday” may have a theme of parenthood, as both of the early teasers center on the Avengers’ relationships with their kids. “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” also suggested another child could be central to the plot of “Doomsday”: Franklin, the son of Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) and Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) of the Fantastic Four. A credits scene in “First Steps” featured Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., seemingly about to kidnap Franklin.

The choice to center on Hemsworth and Evans in the early “Doomsday” footage also suggests Marvel may be leaning into the star power of its original “Avengers” cast to market the film, as opposed to the more recently introduced heroes like Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi or the Fantastic Four.

The first two “Avengers: Doomsday” trailers have premiered exclusively in theaters, representing a unique marketing strategy for the movie and inspiring some fans to go see “Avatar: Fire and Ash” specifically to watch the footage. By Dec. 23, though, Marvel posted the first Steve Rogers-centered trailer on YouTube, giving it about six days of theatrical exclusivity.

It has not been confirmed how many more “Avengers: Doomsday” trailers will be released and when, or where, they will premiere.

Many stars of “Avengers: Doomsday” were announced during a Marvel live stream earlier this year. But the initial trailer confirmed Evans’ involvement for the first time, suggesting there could be other still-unannounced cast members who weren’t named in the original announcement.

The film’s confirmed stars are:
