New Year’s Day closures across North Bay as Families First and fireworks return tonight

Most services shut down Jan. 1, while a free, family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration takes place tonight

As North Bay residents prepare to ring in the new year, many services and businesses across the City will be closed or operating on modified schedules for New Year’s Day.

Government offices, such as North Bay City Hall, will be closed on Jan. 1. Many retail outlets, including Northgate Shopping Centre, will also be closed, as well as grocery stores like Independent, No Frills, Food Basics, and Walmart.

Public transit will also be affected, with North Bay Transit buses not operating on New Year’s Day.

Waste services are also paused for the holiday. The City’s waste diversion facility and the Merrick Landfill are both closed, and there will be no garbage or recycling pickup on Jan. 1. Collection will be pushed by one day through the remainder of the week.

The City says residents can dispose of their Christmas trees at the Public Works Yard, located at 1399 Franklin Street, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Jan. 10. They add that all ornaments, tinsel, and lights must be removed before drop-off, and that Christmas trees will not be collected at the curb with regular garbage.

While many services shut down for the holiday, families looking for something to do on New Year’s Eve are invited to a free community event and celebration.

The 31st Families First New Year’s Eve event is going on tonight at Memorial Gardens and Thomson Park.

The free event begins at 5 p.m. and features a variety of family-friendly activities.

“Come skate with the Battalion and enjoy button-making, face painting, magic shows, interactive reptile shows, a centennial photo booth, the centennial time capsule, and a colouring contest,” the City of North Bay shared in a social media post.

A milestone moment for the City will also take place during the event, as the Centennial Time Capsule will be sealed.

Items inside the capsule can be viewed between 5 and 7 p.m. before it is sealed for the next 25 years.

The evening will wrap up with fireworks at 9 p.m.
