Starbucks coffee chain closed hundreds of locations

Starbucks closed about 400 stores across the country in 2025, per media reports.
The coffee chain is scaling back from its previous push to line every street of New York, Los Angeles and other major metro areas in the United States.
Earlier this year, Starbucks labeled the closures, plus layoffs of 900 corporate employees, as part of a $1 billion restructuring plan. Experts blamed competition from other independent coffee shops and growing chains and drive thrus, as well as more customers moving away from cities since the start of the Covid pandemic.
Starbucks stock dropped 9% this year. And its sales at stores open for a year dropped consistently during that period, CNN reported.
It’s unclear exactly which locations are affected, including in Alabama. Starbucks reportedly closed more than 40 stores in New York City, 20 in Los Angeles, 15 in Chicago, seven in San Francisco, six in Minneapolis and five in Baltimore, CNN reported.
The company still plans to open more stores in 2026, but the locations that closed “were underperforming or unable to meet our brand standards,” a Starbucks spokesperson told CNN.
This story has been updated to reflect the closures already happened in 2025.
