Teri Garr (Phoebe Abbott Sr.)
Teri Garr played Phoebe’s biological mother, Phoebe Abbott Sr., in a heartfelt storyline that deepened the show’s emotional range. Teri was a beloved comedic actress with an Oscar nomination for Tootsie and standout roles in Young Frankenstein and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. She passed away on December 21, 2022, at the age of 75, after a long and courageous battle with multiple sclerosis.
Paxton Whitehead (Mr. Waltham)
Paxton Whitehead portrayed Mr. Waltham, Rachel’s boss at Bloomingdale’s, who disapproved of her relationship with Ross. A classically trained British actor, he had an extensive career in theater, television, and film, including roles on Frasier, Mad About You, and Back to School. He brought a dry wit to his Friends role that fit perfectly with the show’s humor. He passed away on June 16, 2023, at the age of 85.
