Who will the Panthers play in next weekend’s wild-card round?

We don’t know exactly who the Carolina Panthers will be matched up with for their first playoff game in eight years. We do, however, know exactly which division that opponent will be from.

On Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons defeated the New Orleans Saints—handing Carolina their first NFC South title since 2015 and their first postseason berth since 2017. The Panthers have now laid claim to the conference’s No. 4 seed and are set to welcome in the No. 5 seed at Bank of America Stadium for next weekend’s wild-card round.

But who can that No. 5 seed be?

Well, it’ll be between two NFC West clubs—the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers. Carolina’s opponent will be determined by the result of Los Angeles’ matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, which will kick off at 4:25 p.m. ET today.

So, how can the Panthers’ opponent be settled?

Here are the scenarios:

Carolina plays Los Angeles if . . .

  • Los Angeles defeats Arizona

Carolina plays San Francisco if . . .

  • Arizona defeats or ties Los Angeles

The Panthers have already played both teams this season. They recorded a win over the Rams in Week 13 and a loss to the 49ers in Week 12.
