Longtime Detroit sports columnist and radio personality Pat Caputo says he has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, calling it a “death sentence” in a post made on his X account on Monday, Jan. 5.

Caputo, a fixture on WXYT-FM (97.1), last published an article on Nov. 7 and has been off the air since at least the beginning of December. Caputo was a part of WXYT’s “Evening Sports” broadcast and previously worked at The Oakland Press from 1983-2020, becoming one of the most recognizable sports columnists in the Detroit metro area.

Caputo’s post didn’t reveal a full prognosis, but his situation appears serious based on his wording.

“For those wondering where I’ve been: I have been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, commonly referred to as a ‘death sentence’ and had two other serious ailments which put me in ICU for several days. It was sudden. I’ve literally been on my back for weeks. Bless you all,” he posted on Monday.

Caputo’s announcement brought well wishes across social media, including many from longtime Detroit sports writers and radio figures.
