Michigan State starting TE transferring to SEC school
Michael Masunas is moving from the Big Ten to the SEC.
The Michigan State redshirt junior starting tight end announced his transfer commitment to Texas on Monday. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Masunas, 6-foot-5 and 259 pounds, had 24 catches for 270 yards and three touchdowns in 25 career games with a dozen starts.
A former three-star recruit from Arizona, Masunas took a redshirt as a true freshman in 2022. He played mostly on special teams the following year and started the first four games in 2024 before suffering a season-ending injury. Masunas rebounded to post career highs with 19 catches for 232 yards and three scores this season.
New Michigan State coach Pat Fitzgerald has lost more than 40 players to the portal and will be rebuilding a lot of positions, including tight end. In addition to Masunas transferring out, senior Jack Velling used his final season of eligibility.
Masunas was one of three Michigan State transfers to announce their next school so far on Monday, following a pair of true freshmen offensive linemen who never got on the field for the Spartans. Justin Bell committed to Virginia Tech and walk-on Rashawn Rogers picked Ferris State.
The Spartans also had a new portal departure on Monday as true freshman starting long snapper Jack Wills is heading out.
