Bret Hanna-Shuford, known for Broadway roles in ‘Wicked,’ ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ dead at 46

Bret Hanna-Shuford, the Broadway performer known for roles such as “Wicked” and “Beauty and the Beast” died Saturday at the age of 46.

Hanna-Shuford was fighting a battle with two rare forms of cancer.

His husband, Stephen Hanna-Shuford, shared the news on Instagram on Saturday.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that early this morning we said goodbye to the most amazing man, husband and Papa in the universe,” the post read. “Bret Hanna-Shuford left this world peacefully with love surrounded by his family. Our hearts are broken but we will continue to make him proud of us.”

Bret Hanna-Shuford was diagnosed in the summer of 2025 with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and T-cell lymphoma, The New York Post reported.

He made his Broadway debut in “Beauty and the Beast” with credits also including “Wicked” and “The Little Mermaid.”

Bret Hanna-Shuford posted from his hospital bed on Christmas Day, writing, “Merry Christmas to all of you. We are so grateful for your love and support! Looking forward to a new year and hope to see you all soon. Sending love!”
