Sally Goldenberg Joins Metro | The New York Times Company

For years, Metro has kept an eye on Sally Goldenberg, who had so many scoops as a City Hall reporter for Politico that she became known as the de facto dean of New York City politics coverage. In recent months, she’s stepped into the role of senior politics editor at Politico, and you may recognize her as a panelist during this year’s mayoral debates, challenging the candidates with clear, thoughtful questions.

But we are pleased to announce that she will be returning to the reporting ranks and landing scoops for The New York Times.

Sally will join Dana Rubinstein, our new City Hall bureau chief, and Jeffery Mays, a stalwart of our political coverage, to report on the new administration of Zohran Mamdani, the City Council, local politics and how all of that intersects with Albany and the Trump administration. Sally is one of the most well-sourced reporters in the business, breaking some memorable stories, like the unusual living arrangements of Mayor Eric Adams and that he wasn’t the vegan he claimed to be.

With this trio of Dana, Sally and Jeff, we know we are going to deliver to readers stories that hold elected officials and public servants accountable and capture what could prove to be one of the biggest political and cultural shifts in New York’s history.

Starting her career at The Hillsborough Beacon in New Jersey, Sally has followed a tried-and-true trajectory of political coverage. She cut her teeth at The Star-Ledger and The Staten Island Advance, moved on to The New York Post and then landed at Politico, where she worked for 12 years.

Sally starts today, just as Mr. Mamdani settles into Gracie Mansion.
