Friday the 13th Almost Went Meta Years Before Wes Craven’s New Nightmare

Over the course of 12 movies, Friday the 13th‘s Jason Voorhees has been through a lot in the world of horror. He’s been to New York, Hell, and outer space, all before having the ultimate horror showdown with A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Freddy Krueger. Still, he’s never gone meta, though he could have if one particular script would’ve managed to get greenlit.

As fans of the franchise will remember, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan starred Jensen Daggett as Rennie, the film’s final girl. Recently, Daggett did a rare interview to speak about Friday the 13th with Happy Horror Time on YouTube. She shared that after Jason Takes Manhattan was released, there were some talks about doing a follow-up film that would bring her back. This unmade sequel would have featured Daggett as herself with Jason going after her and her family in the real world.

“Somebody wrote this script where Jensen Daggett, me, the real Jensen Daggett, is suddenly being stalked by Jason, in her real life, with her kids or whatever,” she explained. “This script was so good. I still have it somewhere. Somebody gave it to me on a leather binder, and I read it, and I was like, ‘I would totally do this.’ So good.”

The concept is similar to Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, the movie that pitted A Nightmare on Elm Street star Heather Langenkamp against Freddy Krueger in real life. That film came out in 1994, five years after Jason Takes Manhattan, so the unmade movie starring Daggett could have even beaten Wes Craven to the punch, had it been greenlit. While the Daggett-led project didn’t get picked up, she’s still hoping to return to Friday the 13th one day in a new film that unites her with other franchise stars.

As Daggett said, “Don’t we need to have a movie where all the final girls and boys get taken out one by one? I don’t mind [being killed off]. Take me out. It’s fine.”

It’s been reported that another Friday the 13th movie is finally in the works as part of the “Jason Universe,” a new initiative to develop several projects across various platforms featuring a rebooted version of Jason Voorhees. Nothing is yet known about the plot of the reported film. Meanwhile, Peacock is developing a miniseries called Crystal Lake, which will serve as a prequel to the original Friday the 13th with Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees. A release date hasn’t yet been announced.
