Kathryn Hahn in Talks to Play Mother Gothel in Live-Action ‘Tangled’

Kathryn Hahn isn’t quite done being a Disney villain.

Variety has confirmed the “Agatha All Along” star is eyeing a leading role in the studio’s live-action “Tangled” film, in the role of baddie Mother Gothel.

While Hahn is only in talks, she would join the previously reported Teagan Croft in the role of Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider as third lead. Mother Gothel is the villain of the original animated film, one who poses as an overprotective guardian to Rapunzel while secretly using her ward’s magic hair to stay young and beautiful. Disney had no comment on the matter.

Michael Gracey (“The Greatest Showman”) will direct the project, set to roll later this year. Kristin Burr (“Freakier Friday,” “Cruella”) is producing from a script by multi-hyphenate Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“Someone Great,” “Do Revenge,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer”).

The original “Tangled” released in 2010 and earned nearly $600 million at the worldwide box office. The voice cast featured Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Brad Garrett and Donna Murphy as Mother Gothel.

Hahn is on a hot streak with Apple’s awards magnet “The Studio,” where she portrays the foul-mouthed label-whore film marketing executive Maya Mason. The comedy followed the “Agatha” series on Disney+, a spinoff from “WandaVision” where she debuted as Marvel witch Agatha Harkness. She will next appear in “Madden,” David O. Russell’s John Madden biopic starring Christian Bale, Nicolas Cage, Sienna Miller and John Mulaney.

She previously appeared in series including “Mrs. Fletcher,” “Tiny Beautiful Things” and “Transparent.”
