There has been buzz around Kai for some time, with the youngster having signed a deal with Puma aged just 12.

During his time in the United academy, however, the budding forward has not been able to wear his Puma boots.

Appearing on The Smith Brothers: Not A Podcast, dad Wayne explained: “He’s obviously with Puma but when he plays for the Manchester United U16s, something which I really like is he can’t wear his Puma boots.

“All the academy have to wear the same boots. They do it because there’s people from areas where they can’t afford certain boots so I think it’s really good.

“But he’s played for the U18s a few times and he can then wear his Puma boots. He’s doing well to be fair to him.”

Kai began the season in United’s Under-18s, despite still being just 15-year-old at the time.

The left-footed ace came off the bench in games against Everton and Middlesbrough, and even scored in the latter.

He has since been hampered by injury and only recently returned to action.

Rooney scored as he featured from the bench in United’s Premier League Cup 6-0 hammering of Birmingham.

The forward subsequently wrote on Instagram: “We back babyyyyyyy.”

Kai is the eldest of Rooney’s four children with wife Coleen; with younger brothers Klay, 12, Kit, nine, and Cass, seven.

Klay is also in United’s academy, with former club captain Wayne still a regular visitor at Carrington to watch his two eldest sons play.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun last year, Coleen revealed that Kit has “retired” from football – although Cass has followed in his father’s footsteps by starting out at Everton.

Coleen, 39, said of her boys: “Kai, he’s 15, and Klay, who’s going to be 12 in May, they’re both at the academy at Manchester United, they’ve been there for quite a few years now.

“The youngest, he goes in at Everton, he’s just turned seven, but he absolutely loves it, and the third one, he’s retired. He’s retired a few times.”
