UC Irvine narrowly avoids upset by Hawaii

UC Irvine’s Hunter Hernandez led all scorers with 20 points and the Big West-leading Anteaters survived a tremendous effort from the Hawaii women’s basketball team in a 50-47 victory today at Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif.
Jada Wynn added 15 points, including a turnaround jumper in the key with 20 seconds remaining to put the Anteaters up by three.
Hawaii, which held UCI to 23 points less than its season average, ran the clock down to 5.1 seconds before calling timeout.
On the ensuing inbounds play, UH couldn’t get a three off and instead took a meaningless runner in the lane despite being down three points.
UC Irvine (15-2, 6-0) remained undefeated at home this season with its 14th consecutive win.
Hawaii fell to 6-9 overall and 0-5 in conference.
