Sports Seriously
A new season of “The Masked Singer” officially aired this week, and one person behind the masks may be familiar to longtime Boston sports fans.
Season 14 of the celebrity singing competition show officially premiered on Wednesday, Jan. 7, featuring host Nick Cannon and judges Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Rita Ora and Robin Thicke. Out of 18 contestants, Googly Eyes was sent home at the end of the episode, taking off his mask to reveal none other than legendary Red Sox athlete David Ortiz, better known as Big Papi.
Here’s how Ortiz’s first and last performance went, as well as how to watch the rest of this season of “The Masked Singer.”
How did David Ortiz do on ‘The Masked Singer’?
David Ortiz took “The Masked Singer” stage as Googly Eyes, a red monster with five eyes sticking out of its head. According to host Nick Cannon, Googly Eyes was the biggest costume “The Masked Singer” has ever had.
Ortiz sang “Turn Down For What” by DJ Snake & Lil Jon, a song which he told Cannon he could sing all day long. After his elimination and reveal, the baseball legend told the crowd the performance was an incredible workout.
“Man, I gotta tell you man, that’s a straight up work out right there, boy. I don’t need to go to the gym for about a month,” Ortiz said. “But it was so much fun.”
In response to the judges’ guesses at his identity, including Daddy Yankee, Wesley Snipes and Yankees Hall of Famer Derek Jeter, Big Papi only had one thing to say: “Daaaaaa Yankees lose!”
