Local college basketball: Cal women top Wake Forest; Stanford falls to Duke

Sakima Walker scored 17 points to lead three Cal players in double figures as the Bears ended a three-game losing streak by defeating Wake Forest 61-52 at Haas Pavilion on Sunday.

Cal (10-8, 1-4 ACC), which held the Demon Deacons (12-6, 2-4) to single-digit point totals in the first and second quarters, led by 12 at halftime but saw its cushion shrink to five points midway through the fourth quarter. However, Wake Forest got no closer as the Bears held the Deacons to 2-for-7 shooting over the final 4:52.

Gisella Maul (13 points) and Lulu Twidale (12 points) also aided the cause for Cal, which forced 13 turnovers that it turned into 13 points.

“We’ve been battling, competing and playing really hard, so it’s nice to actually have it pay off in the win column,” Cal head coach Charmin Smith said. “We just had more of a sense of urgency and we were able to really take advantage of the big lineup. Things were very different for us in terms of our effort and how badly we wanted to win. We were able to feel good tonight and get some more confidence.”

Mary Carter scored 14 points to lead three Wake Forest players in double figures.

Duke 67, Stanford 60: Nunu Agara had 17 points and 10 rebounds, but the host Cardinal (14-4, 3-2 ACC) fell to the Blue Devils (11-6, 6-0), who extended their winning streak to eight games.

Stanford trailed by five early in the fourth quarter, then forged a 52-52 tie with 6:50 left and trailed by only one with 4:59 to go. However, Duke responded with an 8-0 run and then kept the Cardinal at bay.

“I’m disappointed in the outcome, but maybe more than that in our level of performance and competitiveness,” Stanford head coach Kate Paye said. “Credit to Duke. They’re a very good team. … Our team will take this personally and figure out how we’re going to get better.”

Chloe Clardy and Courtney Ogden scored 11 points apiece and Alexandra Eschmeyer added 10 for Stanford.

Delaney Thomas scored 19 points to lead Duke, which had been 0-2 at Maples Pavilion.
