We may not agree on what the best bagel is – or what goes best on them – but we can agree bagels are great, right?
National Bagel Day, which is Thursday, Jan. 15, is a day to celebrate a food that is truly a classic, having originated in the 13th century and migrated to the U.S. in the 19th century. Its name originates from the words – “bajgiel” in Polish and “beygal” in Yiddish – for ring-shaped bread, according to National Geographic.
As for favorite bagel flavors across the U.S., the top five are plain (No. 1), Asiago (No. 2), everything (No. 3), six cheese (No. 4) and cheddar jalapeño (No. 5), according to a survey of 1,000 conducted in December for Einstein Bros. Bagels 2026 State of the Bagel Report. Favorite shmear flavors, according to the survey? Plain cream cheese (No. 1), garden veggie (No. 2), honey almond (No. 3) and jalapeño salsa (No. 4).

National Bagel Day deals

- H&H Bagels: Members of the H&H Rewards loyalty program can get a free bagel and spread sandwich on Thursday, Jan. 15, for National Bagel Day. Get the deal when you order online or in the app (get it scanned at the register in-store).
- Panera Bread: For National Bagel Day, when you buy an Asiago Bagel Stack you get a second stack of their choice for free with code BOGOSTACK. Panera just added a trio of breakfast Asiago Bagel Stacks including the Wake-Up BLT Asiago Everything Bagel Stack, with bacon, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, arugula, salt and pepper, and cheesy benedict sauce. And there’s a new Jenga-like Stack & Spill game ($7.99) inspired by the look of the Asiago Bagel Stacks.
- Stop & Shop: Through Thursday, Jan. 15, get a free bagel (no purchase necessary) when you check in on your GO Rewards account. If you are not a member, you can sign up in the store (offer is limited to one pick-your-own bagel per household).
- Western Bagel: The Los Angeles-area chain has a $15 special on a baker’s dozen of bagels on Thursday, Jan. 15.
