Poor winter driving conditions due to icy roads and blowing snow causing poor visibility have prompted a number of school cancellations in southern Manitoba for Friday.

All schools are closed in the following divisions:

  • Border Land.
  • Fort La Bosse.
  • Prairie Rose.
  • Prairie Spirit.
  • Red River Valley.
  • Turtle Mountain.

The Franco-Manitoban School Division has closed the following schools:

  • St-Jean-Baptiste.
  • Jours de Plaine (Laurier).
  • École Aurèle-Lemoine (Saint-Laurent).
  • École Saint-Lazare.

Buses are cancelled, but schools remain open with classes as usual, for École Sainte-Agathe, École Réal-Bérard (St-Pierre), École Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, and École Gilbert-Rosset.

Environment Canada has issued blowing snow advisories for a number of communities in southern Manitoba, where visibility is expected to be near zero at times. The conditions are expected to improve by Friday evening.

In the province’s north, meanwhile, blowing snow advisories and cold warnings are in place.

Wind chill values of –45 to –50 will begin Friday afternoon and continues through to Monday morning, the weather agency says.

The conditions have led to some highway closures as well. Anyone travelling is urged to check the status and conditions of the roads.
