Family of Renee Good hires George Floyd’s attorneys to investigate ICE shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (TNND) — The family of Renee Good has hired the same law firm that represented George Floyd’s family as they seek answers and accountability after she was shot and killed by a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis.
Good’s family said in a statement from Chicago-based firm Romanucci & Blandin that they don’t want her used as a “political pawn” but rather as an “agent of peace for all.” The firm said it will conduct a civil investigation into the 37-year-old mother’s death.
“People in Minneapolis and across this country truly, truly care about what happened to Renee Good on January 7, 2026, and are committed to understanding how she could have been killed on the street after dropping her child off at school,” the statement read. “They want to know what could and should have been done to let Renee live and pick her child up safely from school that afternoon. As often as possible, our team will promptly and transparently provide updates on what we learn.”
The family’s decision to hire the firm follows the Department of Justice’s refusal to open a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting. An FBI probe of Good’s death is ongoing.
Several senior prosecutors with the Civil Rights Division in Washington resigned on Tuesday due to a push to investigate Good’s partner, Becca, and the decision not to look into the shooter.
Good was shot by ICE officer Jonathan Ross during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation and deemed a “domestic terrorist” by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem shortly after the incident.
Vice President JD Vance called Ross’s actions “self-defense,” and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt blamed the media for smearing an ICE agent who “properly defended himself from being run over by organized leftist protesters.”
According to Becca, the couple had stopped to observe law enforcement activity on the morning of Jan. 7, with the intention of helping their neighbors.
Video of the incident shows Renee sitting in her vehicle when agents approach and ask her to move, with her saying, “I’m not mad at you.”
Moments later, another agent walks up to Good’s vehicle, ordering her out of the car, and the video shows Good appearing to reverse briefly before turning the wheel away from the agent and driving away.

Becca, standing on the passenger side and trying to open the door, shouts, “drive, baby, drive!”
The agent holding the phone is heard saying, “Whoa,” and gunshots are heard as you briefly see the car going towards a light pole.
“Renee’s partner runs to the vehicle, where Renee is bleeding profusely from her wounds,” the law firm adds. “Video recordings show the agent who fired the shots apparently saying the words “(Expletive) bitch.” Despite having an opportunity to render immediate medical attention to Renee, the agents keep their distance from the vehicle and actively prohibit a bystander who says he is a physician from assessing and assisting with Renee’s clear medical needs.”
Becca released a statement to Minnesota Public Radio on Friday saying, “ We had whistles. They had guns.”
