“Twisty” spy thriller with Emilia Clarke gets impressive Rotten Tomatoes score

Ponies, the new spy thriller starring Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson, has landed its first reviews – and they are extremely positive. Following its premiere this week, the show has been called a “refreshing addition” to the genre.
The series sees the pair play Bea Grant and Twila Hasbeck respectively, two secretaries working at the American Embassy in Moscow in the 1970s. Their world is turned upside down, however, following the death of their husbands.
From there, they become operatives for the CIA working out of the Russian capital, and aim to get to the bottom of the conspiracy that resulted in the death of their loved ones. With contrasting personalities, can they manage it?
Created by Susanna Fogel and David Iserson, the eight-part series was released in full in the US on Peacock earlier today, though UK audiences will have to wait as a release schedule is yet to be confirmed.
Following the release of Ponies, the first reviews have landed on Rotten Tomatoes, and it seems that the spy thriller is a hit as the site is currently reporting an impressive approval rating of 93% from 14 reviews.

“It is a well-made and entertaining period espionage show that, despite the numerous broad strokes it fires, hits its target with solid, entertaining precision… [It’s a] compelling, female-driven buddy spy thriller.”
ScreenAnarchy
“Ponies quickly takes flight, initially due to the combustible chemistry between Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson, which soon develops into a trustworthy friendship that feels entirely authentic… A refreshing addition to the spy series canon.”
Fangirlish
“A smart, twisty but more or less steady spy thriller that doesn’t completely take you out of your comfort zone, but that isn’t all that hard to predict, either. However, all of those things plus Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson make for a winning combination.”

AV Club
“Yes, it’s a spy thriller, but at its heart this is a tale of love and friendship between two young women who find hope in each other during a quest to learn the truth about what happened to their husbands.”
The Hollywood Reporter
“Ponies, starring Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson, has moments of dazzle. But with neither enough depth to leave a lasting impression nor enough entertainment to make up for that, the drama winds up little more than a forgettable distraction.”
Ponies is streaming in the US on Peacock. There is no UK release date yet.
