Percy Jackson Season 2 Debuts One Of The Best Book Characters But There’s One Major Problem

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2, episode 7

Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2 debuts one of the best supporting characters from the books. However, there’s just one key problem, but it’s not too late to fix it.

As seen in Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2, episode 7, Percy and his friends retrieve the Golden Fleece from Luke aboard The Princess Andromeda ahead of a climatic battle at Camp Half-Blood in the upcoming finale. However, the heroes also had some help with the debut of one of my favorite characters from Rick Riordan’s book.

Percy Jackson Season 2, Episode 7 Debuts Blackjack The Pegasus

Percy talking to Blackjack in Percy Jackson season 2, episode 7

In the Percy Jackson books, Blackjack the Pegasus is far more than a cool jet-black mythological mount. He’s also Percy’s sarcastic and loyal companion who becomes a recurring presence throughout the rest of the main Percy Jackson book series and beyond.

Now, Percy Jackson season 2, episode 7 gives Blackjack his live-action debut after Percy frees him, immediately establishing his bond with the Son of Poseidon.

It also helps that Percy’s father also created horses and pegasi. After taking out a group of Luke’s followers, Blackjack agrees to fly Clarisse back to Camp Half-Blood with the Golden Fleece, the start of Blackjack’s ongoing loyalty to Percy in the seasons to come.

However, the only problem is that Percy’s ability to speak with horses is one-sided in the show, meaning we never actually hear Blackjack talk (a massive missed opportunity).

We Need To Hear Blackjack’s Voice In Percy Jackson Season 3 (And Beyond)

That silence from Blackjack is such a waste considering his unique voice/personality is central to why he’s so beloved in the books. He’s informal, blunt, and pretty funny, a key example being his decision to call Percy “boss” instead of “lord” like other horses.

Thankfully, there’s an easy fix moving forward. As Blackjack’s role grows in future seasons of Percy Jackson, letting him speak would elevate every scene he’s in. It would also open the door for inspired voice casting, turning a good adaptation choice into a great one.

With any luck, Percy Jackson season 3 will take the chance to fix this mistake to give us one of the best recurring characters.
