It’s Christmas in January for those who love streaming action movies, from a Ben Affleck/Matt Damon cop thriller to a couple of remade cult classics.
Netflix, Peacock, Hulu, Disney+ and Paramount+ have some good stuff cooking with their new films. There are fresh takes on the 1980s flicks “The Running Man” and “The Toxic Avenger,” a sequel to the horror hit “The Black Phone,” and even a somewhat sexy scary movie for some couch-ready counterprogramming.
Here are 10 new and notable movies you can stream right now:
‘Black Phone 2’
Young Finn (Mason Thames) was kidnapped by the nefarious Grabber (Ethan Hawke) and managed to kill the masked menace in the first “Phone.” Years later, Finn and psychic younger sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) have to face him again – from beyond the grave – at a winter camp once attended by their mom in the enjoyably freaky horror sequel.
Where to watch: Peacock
‘Bone Lake’
In what’s probably best described as a slow-burn, messed-up dark horror comedy, a couple (Maddie Hasson and Marco Pigossi) shows up to a mansion they rented for a romantic weekend. So has a pair of strange lovers (Alex Roe and Andra Nechita). The situation goes from awkwardly playful to hilariously gruesome amid cold-blooded mind games.
Where to watch: Netflix
‘Good Night, and Good Luck: Live from Broadway’
George Clooney directed the 2005 “Good Luck” movie but takes the stage – literally! − in this filmed production of last year’s Broadway show. Clooney scored a Tony Award nomination for his role in the historical play as Edward R. Murrow, the 1950s CBS journalist who takes on the blacklisting tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy.
Where to watch: Netflix
‘People We Meet on Vacation’
The romantic comedy adapting the Emily Henry novel is a breezy affair, at least until it takes a serious turn downwind. Poppy (Emily Bader) and Alex (Tom Blyth) are unlikely college best friends who go on vacations together – usually with high jinks involved – every summer until significant others and their feelings for one another complicate matters.
Where to watch: Netflix
‘The Rip’
In Joe Carnahan’s twisty action flick, A-list BFFs Matt Damon and Ben Affleck lead a crew of Miami cops on a cash seizure at a cartel stash house. Rather than the expected several thousand, they instead find a massive $20 million, sparking a night full of shady shenanigans as team members decide whether to do the right thing or keep the money.
Where to watch: Netflix
‘The Running Man’
Edgar Wright’s redo is a more faithful version of the Stephen King novel, and Glen Powell takes the old Arnold Schwarzenegger role as a guy who has to survive the world’s deadliest game show. It’s a lively, satirical stab at modern-day reality TV, scary big-brother technology, cultural dissension and rampant income inequality.
Where to watch: Paramount+
‘Strange Harvest’
Equal parts slasher flick and faux documentary, the horror movie follows the detectives investigating the return of serial killer Mr. Shiny, who left a gory trail of victims in the past and is back to torment cops with another murder spree. It’s perfect for those who adore Netflix true-crime shows and some freaky cosmic terror.
Where to watch: Hulu
‘The Toxic Avenger’
The splatter-ific reimagining of the 1980s cult classic stars Peter Dinklage has a hard-luck janitor who’s tossed in a vat of toxic waste and emerges as a mutated superhero wielding a radioactive mop. Full of gonzo ultraviolence and plenty of laughs, it’s a must-watch for Gen X-ers who lived for the movies their parents didn’t want them seeing back in the day.
Where to watch: Hulu
‘Tron: Ares’
The third film in the visually snazzy 1980s franchise is one for the die-hard fans. Ares (Jared Leto), a computer-program warrior from the Grid, teams up with a programmer (Greta Lee) when a shady tech corporation and its CEO (Evan Peters) bring armed forces from the digital landscape into the real world.
Where to watch: Disney+
‘Twinless’
After the death of his identical twin, grieving Roman (Dylan O’Brien) attends a support group where he forms a codependent bromance with fellow lonely guy Dennis (James Sweeney), who harbors a secret that threatens their shaky states of mind. O’Brien has never been better navigating the smart humor and big heart of a movie about moving on.
