Behind-The-Scenes Secrets From Boring Jobs

21.
And: “I worked for a huge international company. My position required travel all over, and I advised businesses on how to improve their profit. Sounds pretty boring, and most people thought I spent my time in airplanes and business offices going over P&Ls. However, most of my time was spent tracking down company theft, investigating sexual harassment claims, meeting with local officials who always tried to bribe me or bed me, and trying to make sure drunk owners and bosses got home safely from whatever the latest boring dinner I had to take them to as part of my job.”
“I was one of the few females at this level. It was all men, and I was unable to keep up with who was still with the company, as they never lasted long. They all thought they were so brilliant, but they all went down the rabbit hole with either drugs, women, or kickbacks.
Everyone kept asking me how I lasted so long. I documented everything and never had sex with people I worked with. I didn’t drink or do drugs because I know I have the addiction gene on both sides of my family and have seen what it does to people. I am no saint, but I never took a penny I didn’t earn. I got sick of having to go to funerals and testifying in court about things I saw and uncovered. What did working at a company doing that kind of job do to me? I have a healthy distrust of everyone and everything, and no personal life. If you look into the abyss, it ends up looking back at you. Get away as fast as you can!
I teach school now in a nice little American town and am much happier, but I still have trust issues. Everyone just assumes I am the nice old lady school teacher, and I never say anything to give them any idea that I have seen the worst of humanity and traveled all over the world.”
