If you bought canned tuna at these stores, throw it out immediately

Canned tuna sold in nine states has been recalled over concerns of potential contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Last February, Tri-Union Seafoods voluntarily initiated a recall due to a manufacturing defect on the “easy open” pull tab on certain canned products. The distribution company said in an announcement that over time, the defect may affect the product seal, causing leaks or contamination from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum.

Clostridium botulinum is the cause of botulism, a food poisoning disease that can be life-threatening, according to the statement.

Tri-Union Seafoods later discovered possible contamination in additional canned tuna cases that had been shipped to third-party retailers.

The affected products were distributed to retail stores:

  • Meijer in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin
  • Giant Foods in Maryland and Virginia
  • Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions in California

The recalled products can be identified by the can codes and Best if Used By dates, and UPC numbers as follows:

5 oz. 4 pack of Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil

  • UPC: 4800073265
  • Can code: S84N D2L, S84N D3L
  • Best if Used By date: 1/21/2028, 1/24/2028

5 oz. of Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt

  • UPC: 4800013275
  • Can code: S88N D1M
  • Best if Used By date: 1/17/2028

The FDA urges consumers not to use impacted products–even if it does not look or smell spoiled. The recalled tuna can be returned to the place of purchase for a refund.
