It had been a while since Marquette men’s basketball fans saw 80 points on the good side of the scoreboard.
Before MU’s 105-104 overtime victory over Providence on Jan. 19, the last time coach Shaka Smart’s young team scored 80 or more in a game was Nov. 22 against Central Michigan.
The Golden Eagles shot 53.4% from the floor against the Friars and had 54 points in the first half, with 51 more in the second half and overtime. Nigel James scored 38 points, the most by a true freshman in team history.
When Marquette (7-13 overall, 2-7 in the Big East) faces Butler on Friday, Jan. 23 at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the offensive fireworks could continue.

The Bulldogs (12-7, 3-5) hit 56.9% of their field-goal attempts in a 87-80 victory over DePaul on Jan. 20. It was the seventh time they’ve shot better than 50% this season. But like Providence, defense has been a struggle. Butler has allowed 80 or more points in five of its seven losses.
