UMass edged out Toledo 84-82 on Tuesday to improve to 12-8 for the season so far and 3-5 in Mid-American conference. Buffalo is 13-6 and 3-4 against the MAC after dropping Tuesday’s showdown with Akron 82-63.
The Bulls are hoping the home showdown will be one that they can manage, against a team with a worse record. Buffalo had a tough outing against the Akron Zips, falling 82-63 in a game that never really got close. The Zips jumped out early and kept the pressure on the whole way, leaving Buffalo playing catch-up from the start.
On the bright side, Ryan Sabol was a standout for the Bulls. He scored 26 points and hit five triples, marking his 16th career game with at least 20 points and his 14th game with five or more made threes. He was easily Buffalo’s best offensive weapon and gave the home crowd something to cheer about.
Derrick Talton Jr. was impressive too, logging every minute on the court. That 40-minute effort gave Buffalo’s offense some rhythm and he dished out 10 assists for the first double-digit assist game for a Bull this season. It’s not often you see a player go the full game, so that was a solid effort from Talton Jr.
Now, the Bulls host UMass, a team they have no prior history with since UMass just joined the MAC last summer. UMass is 3-2 across its last five outings.
