Landry declares emergency as ice storm and days of freezing cold threaten Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Jeff Landry declared a statewide state of emergency Thursday as Louisiana braces for a potentially dangerous winter weather event expected to bring ice, snow and days of freezing temperatures, particularly across the northern half of the state.

Landry warned that the approaching system poses a greater threat than last year’s snowstorm, calling ice storms especially dangerous due to the risk of prolonged power outages and deadly road conditions.

“This can be a very, very dangerous event,” Landry said. “I would much rather have a snowstorm than an ice storm.”

The emergency declaration allows the state to deploy resources directly to parishes, activate emergency operations and request federal waivers for commercial motor carriers to prevent fuel and supply shortages. State officials said shortages have already been reported in parts of north Louisiana.

The state Emergency Operations Center is fully activated. Officials said more than 5,000 utility workers are staged across Louisiana, along with National Guard assets, generators, meals, bottled water and high-water vehicles. Eight warming centers are currently open statewide, with at least 29 more planned.

State Climatologist Jay Grymes said the storm could rival the February 2021 winter event in north Louisiana, which resulted in weather-related deaths.

“This is going to be a major event for north Louisiana,” Grymes said.

The developing winter storm is part of a massive system expected to stretch from the Southwest to the East Coast, placing millions of Americans under winter weather alerts, according to the National Weather Service.

Ice, snow and prolonged freeze expected

Forecast models show the highest risk for significant ice accumulation, potentially a half-inch or more, along and near the Interstate 20 corridor, with central Louisiana also at risk.

Grymes said forecast guidance has shifted the ice line slightly north, lowering the chances of significant icing along the I-10 and I-12 corridors, though the threat is not zero.

Rain is expected to move into the state first, followed by a surge of bitter Arctic air late Friday into Saturday.

In northern parishes, rain is expected to freeze on contact, creating hazardous ice conditions. Some areas could then see snowfall on top of the ice, further worsening travel conditions.

Grymes said northern Louisiana could experience more than 70 consecutive hours at or below freezing, with overnight lows near 10 degrees and wind chills approaching zero.

Central and southern Louisiana are also expected to see hard freezes early next week, with the coldest temperatures arriving Monday and Tuesday.

“The cold air is going to get to everybody,” Grymes said.

Worst-case scenarios could bring freezing rain as far south as Alexandria, with snow potentially falling on top of ice in northern parishes. Grymes said snow accumulation would worsen conditions by trapping ice on roadways longer.

Power outages likely, officials say

Public Service Commission officials said ice accumulation near half an inch is a key threshold for widespread power outages, as ice builds on trees and power lines. Officials said most customers affected during the 2021 storm had power restored within two to four days, though some rural areas took longer due to limited road access.

Restoration efforts could be slowed again if roads remain iced over, officials said, urging patience if outages occur.

DOTD preparing roads, warns of closures

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said crews are working 24-hour shifts to prepare for icing conditions, including pretreating bridges, overpasses and elevated roadways. DOTD has stockpiled more than 10 million pounds of salt and 200,000 gallons of brine — the largest inventory in state history — and is staging supplies across the state.

Officials warned that even priority routes, including interstates and major highways, could close if conditions worsen. Drivers were urged to stay off roads unless travel is absolutely necessary and never drive around barricades. Road conditions can be monitored through the 511 Louisiana system.

Fire officials stress heater, generator safety

State Fire Marshal officials warned of increased fire risk during extreme cold, noting Louisiana recorded 88 fire-related deaths in 2025, one of the deadliest years in two decades, with 10 fatalities already reported this year.

Officials urged residents to keep space heaters away from combustible materials, turn heaters and fireplaces off before sleeping, never use ovens or stoves to heat homes, and test smoke alarms.

The state has distributed more than 27,000 smoke alarms and is providing free alarms through local fire departments. Carbon monoxide detectors are also being distributed in northern Louisiana ahead of potential generator use.

Nine people have died in fires across Louisiana this year, and investigators say they all had one thing in common: none of them had working smoke alarms.

Northern Louisiana faces highest ice risk

Forecasters say the greatest threat for icing will be across northern and central Louisiana.

In the ArkLaMiss, meteorologists warn that sleet and freezing rain could begin late Friday night north of Interstate 20, with ice accumulations potentially reaching a quarter to three-quarters of an inch by Sunday. Power outages and hazardous travel are possible as temperatures remain below freezing through the weekend.

In Central Louisiana, meteorologists warn temperatures could fall into the mid-teens with wind chills dropping into the single digits early next week, increasing the risk of hazardous travel, power outages and prolonged impacts across the region.

Baton Rouge, south Louisiana likely rain — but cold remains

For the Baton Rouge area and much of south Louisiana, forecasters say the weekend is trending more toward a cold rain event. However, officials caution that even minor ice accumulation remains possible if temperatures dip lower than expected.

Meteorologists say the more significant concern statewide may be the cold that follows. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the lower 20s Monday and Tuesday morning, raising concerns for frozen pipes, pets and sensitive plants.

Southwest Louisiana watching ice potential, hard freeze

In Southwest Louisiana, rain is expected to start the weekend before colder air pushes south. The highest ice risk remains in Vernon Parish and areas farther north, but forecasters say a hard freeze early next week could pose problems even where icing is limited.

Dense fog advisories were also in effect Thursday morning in parts of the region, adding to early travel concerns ahead of the winter system.

Officials are urging residents to prepare before conditions deteriorate. Recommendations include wrapping exposed pipes, checking generators, safely using space heaters and planning for possible power outages.
