Storm Ingrid causes ‘devastation’ at Porthpean Beach

Cornwall was battered by Storm Ingrid

A ramp and sea wall have been damaged at a popular beach in Cornwall after being battered by Storm Ingrid.

The stone ramp and adjacent sea wall at Porthpean Beach has crumbled during the storm and has left a devastating scene behind.

Videos show the stone ramp completely shattered in half and left resting on the sand below.

Another video shows a large hole has been carved out of the sea wall directly under part of the railing along the road.

Councillor James Mustoe posted on Facebook that the ramp and sea wall had been badly damaged during Storm Ingrid.

Porthpean Beach Ramp And Wall Destroyed

Mr Mustoe has said a “significant” amount of work is needed to fix it but the beach was still accessible on foot from the coast path and the steps.

Mr Mustoe said: “Absolute devastation at Porthpean Beach. The ramp has been destroyed at the bottom end and the adjacent sea wall damaged and undercut in several places.

“Also there must have been tonnes of sand displaced. This is going to need a significant amount of work to put right.

“Thanks to the Cormac team who have met with me and shown me some of the damage.

“The beach is still accessible on foot from the coast path and up the steps to the beach café etc.

“I have also reported damage to South West Water’s infrastructure and the café.”

Cornwall and Devon were battered by Storm Ingrid on Friday and yesterday (Saturday, January 24).

The storm arrived on Friday (January 23) and the Met Office issued a weather warning for wind and rain until 2pm yesterday (January 24) but the warning was extended until 10pm.

CornwallLive reported that there was ‘significant tidal flooding’ across the county as 60mph winds and torrential rain hit the region.
