N.J. weather: Snow chances increase for this weekend. Forecasters tracking coastal storm potential.
Forecasters are closely monitoring the increasing potential for snow in New Jersey this weekend from a coastal storm that could track along the East Coast.
“Chances have increased for impactful snow and/or wind along the immediate East Coast, but uncertainty remains rather high with respect to details,” the National Weather Service said early Tuesday.

The system that would fuel the snow may not even form off the southeast coast until Saturday, forecasters said.
That makes the track a challenge to predict this far out. It could move out to sea with lesser impacts or hug the coast, bringing a greater potential for snow.

The weather service said probabilities of snowfall greater than 4 inches are:
- Near 50% for areas along the Jersey Shore
- Around 40% for the I-95 corridor
- Around 20 to 25% for northwestern NewJersey
“It should also be noted that this storm may have significant winds with it such that even if the center of the storm tracks well offshore, coastal areas could still have strong winds,” the weather service said.

If the storm does track toward New Jersey, it will be plenty cold for snow.
“There is high confidence in that there will be a cold airmass in place, more than sufficient for snow at least at the storm’s onset, if we get it,” the weather service said. “It will generally stay very cold through next weekend into at least the beginning of next week.”

Record cold possible this week
Dangerously cold temperatures with wind chills falling below zero degrees will dominate New Jersey through Friday.
The National Weather Service warns that frostbite and hypothermia could develop within minutes of exposure.
A cold weather advisory remains in effect for most of the state until 10 a.m. Wednesday, with another round of severe cold expected Wednesday night through Friday night.

Tonight into Wednesday morning, wind chills will range from zero to minus 10 degrees across most of New Jersey.
After morning lows in the single digits today, high temperatures will only reach the teens in northwestern areas and low to mid-20s across the rest of the state.

Another wave of Arctic air arrives this evening as a cold front sweeps through the region, though no precipitation is expected.
The most dangerous cold arrives Wednesday through Friday, when daytime highs will be in the the mid to upper teens in northern counties and near 20 degrees in South Jersey.
Overnight lows Wednesday through Friday will drop to either low single digits or below zero across all of New Jersey.
Wind chills will plunge well below zero — reaching as low as minus 20 degrees near and northwest of the I-95 corridor.
The weather service said that “bone chilling cold” could affect energy infrastructure due to increased heating demands.
Low temperature records could be broken later this week.
The extended forecast shows conditions remaining very cold through at least the beginning of next week.
