Philadelphia snow removal continues as some narrow neighborhood streets go unplowed

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — As snow removal crews continued hauling truckloads of snow to the city’s 37 designated dumping sites on Tuesday, many residents on smaller neighborhood streets said they were still waiting for their first plow.

Some long-time city dwellers shrugged their shoulders at the sight of buried cars outside their homes, saying it comes with the territory.

“They’re side streets, you know, that’s the way it always is,” said Bridesburg resident Joe Lange. Action News found several snow-covered roads in the neighborhood, where some residents shoveled their vehicles out in groups while others resigned themselves to being stuck.

“It’ll be there until Saturday at least. We had to cancel some appointments, that’s the way it is,” Lange said.

Over in Mayfair, with parked cars blocking the way on Stirling Street, a plow operator couldn’t make it down the narrow side street even if they tried. But 15-year resident Malhon Sutton said plows rarely make it through.

“Not really. Once in a blue moon,” Sutton said. “You just dig yourself out.”

City Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi said crews are working to reach those smaller roads, using smaller excavators to navigate tight blocks.

“We’re coming, we’re coming to a neighborhood near you,” Del Rossi promised.

She cautioned, however, that the operation will take days.

“This kind of snow hasn’t been here in a while, and we haven’t done a lifting set since like 2016,” she said.

Officials warned that temporary road closures may occur as multiple pieces of equipment are deployed to clear difficult areas.

Residents are encouraged to continue submitting complaints to 311, which the city is using to identify and prioritize problem spots.
