Mandy Patinkin Joins ‘God of War’ Series as Odin

Mandy Patinkin is the latest to join Amazon Prime Video’s series adaptation of “God of War.”

He will play Odin, “the most powerful Aesir god.” Per the character description: “Odin, the All-Father, is not physically imposing or particularly god-like: but looks can be deceiving. [He’s] a patriarch who leads with an iron fist, and an unrivaled seeker of knowledge. When it comes to seeking out prophecy, Odin is paranoid, manipulative, and dangerous — he will do anything to try and prevent Ragnarök, the Norse end of days. He serves as a formidable antagonist to Kratos.”

Based on the popular PlayStation video game, “God of War” follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their ancient adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus attempts to show his father how to be a better human.

Patinkin joins previously announced cast members Ryan Hurst (who plays Kratos), Max Parker (Heimdall), Teresa Palmer (Sif) and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Thor). He is best known for his roles in “The Princess Bride,” “Homeland” and “Chicago Hope.”

“God of War” has received a two-season order at Amazon, with pre-production now underway in Vancouver. Ronald D. Moore is the writer, executive producer and showrunner on the series under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye (“Shōgun,” “The Boys,” “Fallout”) has signed on to direct the first two episodes.

The show is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Additional executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis are co-executive producers on the series.
