20 Upcoming Film & TV Shows That Just Got Cancelled – Page 17

While doing the press rounds for the recently released Greenland 2: Migration, director Ric Roman Waugh talked up plans for a threequel to close the disaster movie trilogy out.
Even though the second film ends with the death of Gerard Butler’s protagonist John Garrity, Waugh considered a third film focused on his and Allison’s (Morena Baccarin) son Nathan (Roman Griffin Davis), possibly even set in the far future when he has his own kids.
However, all talk of Greenland 3 was obliterated overnight once the second film’s box office numbers came in, given that it opened to just $8.5 million in the U.S. and has barely cracked $20 million worldwide at the time of press.
A big part of the problem here is that Greenland 2 cost a whopping $90 million – almost triple the original’s $35 million budget – and while it’ll likely perform well on streaming as the first film did, the steep price tag makes it near-impossible for the sequel to turn a profit given its lackluster theatrical performance.
And so, it’s safe to say that Greenland will be bowing out as a duology.
