As Syracuse prepares to kick off its regular season, the sting of last season’s Final Four loss continues to drive the Syracuse men’s lacrosse team as it heads into its fifth season under head coach Gary Gait.

This year, the Orange will test themselves against a challenging schedule featuring 10 of the 20 teams ranked in the Inside Lacrosse Preseason Poll. But Gait and the Orange are dialed in on making this the season they win a national championship.

Senior Captain Joey Spallina told media that the 2025 semifinal defeat is still fresh in his mind.

“Obviously, it was great to be there but we weren’t there for a long time,” Spallina said. “It still stings; I still think about it.”

Spallina will be joined again by senior attack Finn Thomson and Senior defender Billy Dwan III. Other key returners include senior midfielder Michael Leo, junior face-off specialist John Mullen, senior goaltender Jimmy McCool and senior defenseman Riley Figueiras.

They’ll face a challenging slate this year, including Princeton at the ACC-Ivy challenge. But the Orange open at No. 2 on the preseason poll, and will start things off against the No. 17 Terriers in a first-ever meeting between the teams.
