One target and Kyogo watch – Birmingham City state of play on deadline day

Birmingham City are looking to fine-tune their squad on transfer deadline day

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies

Birmingham City have left themselves one job to do on transfer deadline day: sign a centre-back.

Chris Davies has reaffirmed his desire to see a fourth central defender added to his squad before the transfer window shuts at 7pm this evening.

Blues have signed five players in the form of Kai Wagner, Jhon Solis, Ibrahim Osman, August Priske and Carlos Vicente and all of them are starting to affect Championship matches.

Wagner has been ever-present since signing from Philadelphia Union, while Blues’ other four signings came to the fore in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Oxford United.

As far as outgoings go, Blues might be slightly busier – but not too busy according to Chris Davies. Willum Willumsson’s transfer to NEC Nijmegen was confirmed last night.

“I don’t think we’ll be too busy,” Davies said. “There’s possibly one or two that will look to move on.

“It becomes quite unpredictable at this stage because you never know what phone call is going to take place.

“Obviously we have been looking to strengthen in the central defensive area because we are a little bit short.

“That’s probably all I can foresee happening.”

The unpredictable element on deadline day is the future of Kyogo Furuhashi.

Kyogo hasn’t played a great deal in the last two games and was an unused substitute against Oxford, despite netting twice in his previous three matches.

Davies’ decisions of late have made it clear that Kyogo has now fallen behind Priske and is fourth-choice striker.

The fourth-choice striker of a Championship club isn’t making Japan’s World Cup squad, which is Kyogo’s pipe dream for 2026 after a barren 2025, and that leaves the 31-year-old with a decision to make.

Celtic and Swansea City have registered an interest in Kyogo and Blues would prefer a permanent move rather than a loan, particularly if he moves to a Championship rival.
