Cleanup Underway on Avalon After 40+ cm Snowfall

The cleanup process is underway on the Avalon after the latest winter blast which saw Mother Nature drop over 40 cm of snow.
Schools in the metro area have a delayed opening of 3 hours this morning.
Environment Canada meteorologist Tiffany Cheeks says total amounts vary throughout the metro region.
A total of 44 cm of snow was recorded at St. John’s International Airport while a station in the west end recorded about 25 cm.
The winds were howling last night leading to power outages affecting over 6,000 customers at one point.
Most customers have had their power restored as of this morning, leaving small pockets of customers still without.
Reported delays can be viewed on the VOCM Storm Watch Page.

Meanwhile, How and when the City of St. John’s gets major routes and sidewalks open varies from storm to storm.
Councillor Greg Noseworthy says typically, the aim is to get all major routes open within 12 hours of a storm, but it also depends on snowfall amounts and other factors.
“Every storm is a little bit different,” says Noseworthy. “We do have a standard for snowfalls of up to 25 cm, it’s within 12 hours we have a first cut on all the roads, and the sidewalk plows are also hitting the network for our sidewalk clearing areas. When we get a higher total, it really can disrupt that. Especially when we get a bit of rain, that additional weight…just like when you’re clearing your driveway, it slows our machines down. So it’s a bit of a fluid situation, but at the end of the day, we’re making sure that we’re getting everybody back on the roads, back on the sidewalks to work, school and places of interest.”
