A man has appeared in court after a man was found with serious injuries on a new build estate in the early hours of the morning.

Paramedics were called to Hotspur North in Backworth at 4.40am on Wednesday, January 28, following a report that a man in his 50s had been found with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital but was discharged later that morning.

Two police cordons were put in place on the estate following the incident, with a large section of a grassed area taped off near the junction of Hotspur North and Briardene Way. A smaller cordon was also in place adjacent to the grassed area.

Northumbria Police launched an investigation to determine the cause of the man’s injuries and have now charged a man in connection with the incident. Samuel Olvhoj, 37, of Wilfred Street, Newcastle, has been charged with wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

He appeared before Mid and South East Northumberland Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Monday, February 2) and was remanded in custody. He is due to appear before Newcastle Crown Court on March 2.
