The Jets are in need of a quarterback after the Justin Fields experiment failed to produce results. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has been mentioned as a potential trade target for the Jets, but according to ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini, one of Murray’s teammates is panning that idea.
Cimini described the interaction he had with the unnamed teammate during Wednesday’s episode of his podcast “Flight Deck with Rich Cimini.”
“I was talking to someone, one of his former teammates, the other day,” Cimini said. “He basically warned the Jets. I said, ‘You know the Jets might be going after Kyler in a month or two,’ and he goes, ‘No, no, no, the Jets don’t want to do that. You don’t want Kyler Murray as your quarterback.’ This is someone who played with Murray.”
Cimini added he would be surprised if the Jets went after Murray because of durability concerns and questions about Murray’s commitment to football.
Cimini did mention that Murray’s teammate, Jacoby Brissett, was someone to watch because he fits coach Frank Reich’s vision of what a quarterback should be: taller and a “pocket-style passer.” Brissett, who took over as the starter after Murray’s injury, worked with Reich when the two were with the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 through 2020.
Brissett provided a brief spark for the Cardinals’ offense in 10 games this season, completing 64.9% of his passes for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Jets would have to trade for Brissett because his contract ends after the 2026 season.
Brissett would give the Jets a short-term option to start at quarterback and allow them to draft a quarterback, letting the drafted player develop with no rush to insert him as the starter. Cimini says Brissett would make sense based on a mutual connection he and Jets head coach Aaron Glenn share.
“Brissett also happens to be very close with Bill Parcells,” Cimini said. “He basically looks at Parcells as a mentor. They developed a relationship many years ago when Brissett was a high-schooler in South Florida, where Parcells lives. They hit it off and they’ve stayed in touch. Of course, we know Parcells and Aaron Glenn are very close, so you can connect the dots there.”
