School bus struck and killed 11-year-old girl in hit and run in Bath Beach, Brooklyn

BATH BEACH, Brooklyn (WABC) — A child has died after being struck by a school bus in a hit-and-run in Bath Beach, Brooklyn, police said.

New video shows the moments leading up to the horrific and tragic accident.

The 11-year-old girl who was attempting to cross the street was hit by a school bus that did not stop on 23rd Avenue and Bath Avenue just after 3 p.m. on Thursday.

It was just after school dismissal.

Video shows the girl standing at the corner with the right of way, then she darts across the street just as a school bus is making a turn.

“She sprinted. She just took off and tried to like, if you see a train coming and you try to run to beat the train, it was just like that. Being that I’ve driven those types of vehicles, it’s hard to see. Because the dimensions. You’re higher, there’s things blocking,” a resident said.

Just before she crosses the street, the driver is still approaching the intersection, then as the driver makes the turn, a glare from the sun appears to hit the windshield as she sprints across the street.

The child was transported to Maimonides Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the school bus did not remain on the scene but was located by police hours later several miles away in Brooklyn.

“What I also don’t like are these turns, where it’s our green light, we cross, but the cars turn,” resident Julia Kostenko said.

Workers at the bodega on the corner where it happened say the girl had just bought chocolate and a soda moments before.

“Every day. Every day she comes. She’s my good customer. Quiet,” the deli worker said.
