MONTICELLO, Minn. (WBAY) – A man wanted for crimes in Wisconsin is being held on $100,000 bail in Minnesota after leading Wright County deputies on a chase that reached over 100 mph.
Robert Chilcote, 29, was the last person to see a missing Marinette woman alive, Gabriella Cartagena’s family told us.
Chilcote was taken into custody after a 16-minute pursuit that spanned 17 miles and involved 10 deputies. An AR-15 rifle with an inserted magazine was found on the front passenger seat of his vehicle.
Robert Chilcote was identified by police as a person of interest in Gabriella Cartagena’s disappearance in Marinette. He was arrested after a high-speed chase in Wright County, Minnesota.(Wright County Sheriff’s Office)
Chilcote has not been charged in connection with Cartagena’s disappearance.
She was last seen at Red Arrow Park in Marinette on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
Chase begins in Monticello
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office was notified on Feb. 5 about a person wanted in connection with an aggravated assault and possible homicide. He was driving a red Toyota Prius and was said to be armed with a firearm.
A deputy located the Prius and initiated a traffic stop using emergency lights. When Chilcote failed to comply with orders to exit the vehicle during a high-risk stop, he drove away.
Chilcote sped up to over 100 mph, disregarded traffic signals and stop signs, and recklessly passed other vehicles, a probable cause statement said.
Deputies set up stop sticks. While attempting to avoid them, Chilcote drove onto the median, ran over a stop sign and got stuck.
Chilcote was then taken into custody. Public access records show he’s being held for fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and being a fugitive from justice from another state.
Search continues for missing woman
Marinette County dispatch confirmed they are no longer looking for a red Prius in connection with Cartagena’s disappearance, but law enforcement is still looking for any home or business security video of it.
The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office and Menominee Police Department in Wisconsin are specifically asking for any residents or business owners along Highway 41 to check their cameras. They are interested in the time between 9:25 and 9:45 p.m. on February 4.
They say the Prius would have Wisconsin license plates.
Cartagena’s family tells us she was last seen with Chilcote and things appeared normal between them when they left for a grocery store.
The family said their last communication with her was a phone call where she pleaded, “Please don’t shoot me. I’m sorry.”
