A 41-year-old has been charged with confining and killing his common-law spouse in southeastern New Brunswick.

Alex Beers appeared Wednesday in Moncton provincial court, where three charges were laid, according to court records.

Beers is charged with the first-degree murder of Hyde Jochelman between Nov. 18, 2020, and Oct. 27, 2021, confining her between those same dates and failing to provide the 33-year-old the necessities of life during that time.

The offences are alleged to have occurred in Saint-Paul, a rural area about 30 kilometres north of Moncton.

New Brunswick RCMP issued a news release Wednesday that said officers were called to a home in the community around 2:35 p.m. on Oct. 27, 2021, after a report of a sudden death.

Police say Jochelman was found dead.

RCMP say that between 2022 and 2024, new information led to deeming her death suspicious and a homicide.

Police issued a news release last month announcing that development, telling CBC News there was a suspect but no arrest had been made.

RCMP said Wednesday that on Feb. 10, officers arrested a man in Moncton.

Beers was remanded and is scheduled to return to court Feb. 26.

RCMP Staff-Sgt. Dan Sharpe said police hope the charges provide some closure and assurance Jochelman was not forgotten.

“Complex investigations like this take time, but our focus has always been on ensuring justice for Hyde and her family, and I want to recognize the exceptional efforts of everyone involved in this file for making that happen.”
