MILAN — Los Angeles Kings winger Kevin Fiala was stretchered off the ice late in Switzerland’s group-stage game against Canada after getting tangled up with Tom Wilson along the boards. Fiala’s left leg apparently was injured when Wilson fell on top of him during a seemingly innocuous play. Neither player was attempting to throw a hit.
Swiss players were fighting back tears as Fiala was put on the stretcher, face down, and wheeled off the ice. Fiala is one of Switzerland’s top players, with 18 goals and 22 assists in 56 games with the Kings this season. The play conjured unfortunate memories of the Islanders’ John Tavares injuring his knee during the Sochi Olympics in 2014, which cost him the rest of the season. The risk of injury is one of the reasons the NHL has been lukewarm to the idea of shutting down its season in order to accommodate the Olympics every four years.
