‘Who’d be a football manager!’: Danny Cowley hits out at ‘knee-jerk’ sackings

COLCHESTER United head coach Danny Cowley has hit out at clubs making ‘knee-jerk reactions’ in dismissing their managers.
The U’s this weekend head to Barrow, who sacked boss Paul Gallagher on Wednesday night after just five games in charge and immediately replaced him with Dino Maamria.

Managerial departures have been a hot topic this week, following the high-profile Premier League sackings of Thomas Frank and Sean Dyche.
Cowley says he feels sorry for Gallagher following his dismissal by the Bluebirds – and says the high churn of managers in the modern game leaves him angry and annoyed.

Cowley said: “Barrow now have obviously had three managers in pretty much five weeks, which is crazy.

“Who’d be a football manager!
“In what other industry do these decisions get made?
“It’s obviously a really emotional business and some people decide that this is the best way for their football clubs to operate.
“It blows my brains if I’m honest but it is what it is.
“Dino Maamria is somebody we know well and we’ve managed against his teams before.
“We’d watched Barrow against Notts County at the weekend in the early part of the week and were really impressed with them – they were really unlucky to lose that game.

“I feel really sorry for Paul Gallagher, I have to say this.
“He’s been a really good player, new manager, comes into his first job, five games, four away and after the fifth game, finds himself out of work.
“I have to say it really annoys me and it makes me really angry.

“I do actually think that somewhere along the line we need to look at it just for the sake of the clubs let alone the managers, because I just think these knee-jerk reactions, I’m not sure.

“Should they do it in the transfer window, so that you can only change your manager in this period? I don’t know.
“However, they decide, for the sake of everyone I think it needs to be looked at, because I don’t think it’s any way to operate.
“Dino’s a good guy and I’m really pleased for him personally, because I know how much he loves football and I know how eager he was, to get back in.
“But I’m disappointed for Paul Gallagher, like I would be for any young manager that was in his position.

“My heart is always with managers, because only the people that have lived it know how tough the job is.”
