A Look Back at Jackie Kennedy’s Funeral

Along with Jackie’s children, Caroline and JFK Jr., Caroline’s husband Edwin Scholssberg and Jackie’s paramour Maurice Tempelsman watched as Jackie’s coffin was taken away ahead of her funeral service.

St. Ignatius Loyola, where Jackie’s funeral service was held, had a special meaning for the late First Lady, as it was the same church where she had been baptized and later received her confirmation as a teenager.

Among the readings by friends and family at the service, Caroline read “Memory of Cape Cod,” by Edna St. Vincent Millay, a favorite of her mother’s. Templesman read out, Ithaka by C.P. Cavafy, with his own addendum: “And now the journey is over, too short, alas, too short. It was filled with adventure and wisdom, laughter and love, gallantry and grace. So farewell, farewell.”

Then-First Lady Hillary Clinton attended the mass for Jackie in New York and was later joined by President Bill Clinton for the processional from the airport in Washington DC to Jackie’s final resting place at Arlington Cemetery.

President Clinton eulogized her as a “remarkable woman whose life will forever glow in the lives of her fellow Americans.” As she was laid to rest next to the eternal flame she had lit three decades previous in honor of JFK, Clinton added, “May the flame she lit so long ago burn ever brighter here and always brighter in our hearts. God bless you friend, and farewell.”

In another nod to Jackie’s beloved late husband JFK, the brief service carried out at the gravesite at Arlington was conducted by the retired Roman Catholic Archbishop of New Orleans, Rev. Philip J. Hannan. A family friend, Hannan also gave a eulogy at the funeral for JFK in 1963.

During the service, John Jr. read from Thessalonians 4:13-18, while Caroline read Psalm 121. The Navy Sea Chanters also sang “Eternal Father, Strong to Save,” also known as the Navy Hymn—a nod to JFK’s naval service.

Among the honorary pallbearers for the Arlington service were Timothy Shriver,, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Christopher Lawford, William Kennedy Smith, Edward M. Kennedy Jr. and Jack Walsh, a retired Secret Service agent who had guarded the Kennedy family.

When she was laid to rest, Jackie became only the second First Lady to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, following after Helen Taft who was also buried next to her husband, President William Howard Taft.
