1 killed, multiple injured in downtown Mobile shooting

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Mobile police said one man is dead and multiple people are injured following a shooting in the area of Dauphin Street and Joachim Street.
The shooting happened just after 11 p.m. Sunday on Dauphin Street, according to Mobile Police Chief William Jackson. At least one person remains in critical condition.
“Right at 11 o’clock p.m. on Sunday night, there were shots that were fired right here in the area of Joachim and Dauphin Street,” Jackson said. “Right now, we do know we have multiple gunshot victims. We don’t have names. We don’t know what the altercation was in reference to. We do have one that is deceased at another scene, and one that we know is critical. That’s about as much we know right now at this point.”
Two crime scenes under investigation
Police are investigating two scenes: one at the corner of Dauphin and Joachim streets, and another in a parking lot one block away.
Jackson said it’s difficult to determine the exact number of victims because some people went to the hospital on their own following the shooting.
The incident occurred hours after more than 100,000 people flooded downtown Mobile for Mardi Gras celebrations. Jackson emphasized the shooting was not related to the festivities.
“This had nothing to do with Mardi Gras, but this was probably Mardi Gras crowd spill over,” Jackson said. “But we had probably between 45 and 55 officers here, on foot and on horseback. We had teams right in the attack area where it happened, when it happened. So, it was flooded with law enforcement.”

Person of interest detained
Police have detained one person of interest in connection with the shooting, though Jackson said the individual has not been named as a suspect.
“We have some interviews being done. We have someone detained as a person of interest. Can’t say, for now, that he’s a suspect, just a person of interest,” Jackson said. “And the detectives are on both scenes, still working it actively.”
It remains unknown how many shots were fired or if there were multiple shooters. The investigation is ongoing.
