With the enthralling league phase of the UEFA Champions League now concluded, we move on to the knockout stages. The UEFA Champions League play-offs are sure to be filled with drama, as teams battle to reach the last 16 and attempt to emulate reigning champions Paris-Saint Germain, who won the competition last term despite finishing 15th in the league phase after narrowly avoiding elimination. One of the sides looking to repeat PSG’s heroics are Newcastle United, who drew with the Parisians in a hugely impressive performance at the Parc des Princes on the final night of the league phase.
Whilst it was a creditable point and a performance to remember, it was not enough to secure a spot in the last 16, and Newcastle dropped down to 12th place.
They now face a play-off match against Azerbaijani side Qarabag, with a spot against either Barcelona or Chelsea awaiting them in the last 16.
This is the first time that Newcastle have reached the knockout rounds in the UEFA Champions League, meaning they can make more club history with a victory.
